Energy Strategies & Statements
Energy analysis to deliver efficient, compliant, future-ready developments
Energy Strategies
Together, our engineers and sustainability consultants aim to optimise the operational energy consumption of buildings. We can support clients and design teams in developing energy strategies to meet an array of targets, be they aspirational or regulatory, and ensure these are embedded within design specifications, delivered during construction, and maintained in operation.
Our involvement at the very earliest stage in the design process can often lead to the greatest impact and lowest cost solutions. Our team’s expertise include certified passive house designers, CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants, sustainability consultants and engineers with a wealth of experience to provide strategic guidance at any project stage. We use both compliance and performance energy modelling to simulate a buildings energy use and associated carbon emissions.
Our consultants support you from the outset by setting clear targets and undertaking early stage calculations to identify the optimal combination of passive design, efficient building fabric and services, and renewable energy technologies. Our aim is always to deliver practical solutions tailored to the needs of your building.
Energy Statements for Planning
Our services include preparation of energy statements to support planning submissions. We have extensive experience in our team of dealing with a wide range of local authorities across the country in addition to preparing submissions for GLA referable schemes.
Compliance Energy Modelling
Our qualified Low Carbon Energy Assessors can produce Part L, Future Homes Standard, and EPC compliance assessments for submission to Building Control for both domestic and non-domestic buildings.
Our assessments come with support and guidance to clients and design teams on routes to achieving Building Regulations compliance and how to meet further aspirational reductions and target EPCs. We can provide guidance for both new build and refurbishment developments, as well as direct improvements necessary for existing buildings to meet minimum EPC standards.
Performance Energy Modelling
Performance energy modelling goes beyond compliance modelling and aims to accurately predict the operational energy consumption of buildings. Performance modelling is a critical part of delivering genuinely low-energy future ready buildings. We combine dynamic simulation modelling, operational energy analysis and benchmarking to help clients make informed decisions from concept design to occupation.
We work collaboratively with architects, developers and design teams to close the gap between predicted and actual energy use, improve operational performance and support compliance with evolving industry standards.
CIBSE TM54
CIBSE TM54: Evaluating Operational Energy Performance of Buildings at the Design Stage is a methodology developed to produce more realistic predictions of operational energy use. Unlike traditional compliance modelling, TM54 assesses how buildings are likely to perform in real operation by considering occupancy patterns, equipment loads, controls strategies and user behaviour. It includes unregulated energy consumption excluded from Part L assessments.
TM54 helps address the long-standing “performance gap” between design-stage predictions and actual in-use energy consumption, providing clients with greater confidence in predicted building performance.
We undertake detailed TM54 assessments using dynamic simulation modelling to evaluate realistic building performance scenarios.
Our assessments help project teams identify opportunities to improve efficiency early in the design process and provide robust evidence to support low-energy design strategies.
- Operational energy modelling and benchmarking
- Detailed end-use energy breakdowns
- Occupancy and operational scenario analysis
- HVAC systems and controls optimisation
- Design option appraisals to reduce operational energy demand
- Support for planning requirements and sustainability targets
- Reporting aligned with TM54 methodology and best practice guidance
NABERS Design for Performance
NABERS UK Design for Performance (DfP) is a performance-based framework that verifies a building’s operational energy efficiency against measurable outcomes. Originally developed in Australia, the NABERS approach has been adapted for the UK market to encourage buildings to achieve verified energy performance targets in operation rather than relying solely on design intent.
The framework uses a star rating system to measure operational efficiency and places strong emphasis on accountability throughout design, construction and handover stages.
We support clients and design teams in targeting and achieving NABERS Design for Performance ratings
- Performance target setting
- Early-stage energy performance strategy development
- Design reviews focused on operational outcomes
- Dynamic simulation modelling
- Coordination with landlords, architects, MEP designers and contractors
- Evidence preparation and documentation for Independent Design Review
- Support through design, construction and post-occupancy stage
CRREM
CRREM (Carbon Risk Real Estate Monitor) is a widely recognised decarbonisation framework used by investors, asset managers and property owners to assess stranded asset risk associated with climate change and net zero transition pathways.
CRREM provides science-based carbon reduction targets for different asset types and regions, enabling stakeholders to understand whether a building’s operational energy and carbon performance align with future decarbonisation trajectories.
By combining operational energy modelling with practical engineering insight, we can help clients develop realistic, deliverable pathways to avoid asset stranding against CRREM carbon and energy pathways.
- Existing asset energy and carbon performance reviews
- CRREM pathway analysis and benchmarking
- Proposed developing positioning based on predicted operational energy assessments outcomes.
- ESG and investor reporting support
BREEAM Compliant reports
The BREEAM Energy category typically represents one of the largest contributors toward an overall rating, covering areas such as operational energy performance, metering, low carbon design and efficient building systems.
Our team supports projects from early concept stage through to completion, helping clients maximise available energy credits (ENE 01 to ENE 08) while delivering buildings that are efficient, practical and aligned with long-term operational performance objectives.
Our Projects
Every project has unique energy performance targets, planning requirements, and sustainability objectives. Whether supporting healthcare, commercial, educational, or residential developments, our engineers prepare robust energy statements and develop tailored energy strategies that help projects meet regulatory requirements while reducing carbon emissions and energy demand.
Our energy statement and analysis services can be applied to projects of all sizes and complexities, from refurbishment and fit-out schemes to large-scale new build developments. By assessing building performance, low-carbon technologies, and energy-saving opportunities from the earliest stages of design, we help project teams make informed decisions, streamline the planning process, and create efficient, sustainable developments.
