Lighting, Daylight and Sunlight Modelling
Lighting design that supports comfort, performance and sustainability
We understand the crucial role lighting plays in energy consumption, occupant comfort and wellbeing, as well as the overall functionality of a space
Lighting plays a crucial role in energy consumption, occupant comfort and wellbeing, as well as the overall functionality of a space. Our team provides both internal and external lighting design services, supporting projects from initial concept and planning through to detailed design, specification, and compliance. We also produce technical reports to support planning applications.
In addition to artificial lighting design, we undertake daylight and sunlight assessments to evaluate the impact of proposed developments on both new and existing buildings. Using recognised assessment methodologies, we analyse daylight availability, sunlight access, and overshadowing effects to help ensure developments provide high-quality internal environments while minimising impacts on neighbouring properties and external amenity spaces.
Our services can be tailored to projects of all scales, from small refurbishment and fit-out schemes to major mixed-use and masterplan developments. By considering natural and artificial lighting together, we help create environments that are visually comfortable, energy efficient, and compliant with planning and regulatory requirements, supporting successful project outcomes from design through to delivery.
External lighting
External lighting design balances safety, security and usability while minimising environmental impact, energy consumption and obtrusive lighting.
- External lighting design and calculations
- Planning support and environmental considerations
- Car park and site-wide lighting strategies
- Security and access lighting
- Assessment of light spill and obtrusive lighting
- Energy efficient external lighting solutions
Internal lighting
Internal lighting design considers the functional requirements of a space alongside energy efficiency, visual comfort and applicable standards.
- Lighting design and calculations
- Emergency lighting design
- Lighting controls and energy efficiency strategies
- Compliance with relevant guidance and regulations
- Workplace, educational and specialist environment assessments
- Refurbishment and existing building upgrades
- Energy efficient lighting upgrades
Overshadowing & Daylighting / Sunlight Assessments
Access to natural daylight within internal environments is linked to improved occupant wellbeing and productivity, while reducing reliance on artificial lighting and its associated energy use. At Delta Green, we understand that achieving good daylight levels must be carefully balanced against unwanted heat loss and solar gain through intelligently designed glazing. This holistic approach allows us to optimise environmental performance, supporting both occupant comfort and minimised energy demand.
Good daylighting design influences far more than glazing provision. It can affect building form, fabric performance, internal layouts and the need for external shading. Considering daylight early in the design process allows us to shape buildings that make better use of natural light while avoiding issues such as glare, overheating and poor thermal comfort.
We carry out detailed daylighting assessments and undertake solar shading analysis, and provide the evidence required for design optimisation, planning submissions, and certification schemes such as BREEAM or WELL. By modelling daylight performance before a building is constructed, we help design teams make informed decisions that improve both environmental quality and overall building performance.

Our Projects
Every project has unique lighting, planning, and occupant comfort requirements. Whether supporting healthcare, commercial, educational, residential, or mixed-use developments, our engineers provide specialist lighting design, daylight analysis, and sunlight and overshadowing assessments to help create high-quality, sustainable environments that balance user experience with regulatory and planning requirements.
Our lighting and daylight assessment services can be applied to projects of all sizes and complexities, from refurbishment and fit-out schemes to large-scale new build and masterplan developments. By evaluating natural daylight levels, sunlight access, overshadowing impacts, and artificial lighting performance from the earliest stages of design, we help project teams make informed decisions that enhance visual comfort, improve energy efficiency, and support planning approval. Through detailed analysis and practical design solutions, we create well-lit environments that perform effectively for occupants while responding sensitively to their surroundings.
